Markowitz versus Michaud : Portfolio Optimization Strategies Reconsidered

چکیده
Several attempts have been made to reduce the impact of estimation errors on the optimal portfolio composition. On the one hand, improved estimators of the necessary moments have been developed and on the other hand, heuristic methods have been generated to enhance the portfolio performance, for instance the "resampled efficiency" of Michaud (1998). We compare the out-ofsample performance of traditional Mean-Variance optimization by Markowitz (1952) with Michaud's resampled efficiency in a comprehensive simulation study for a large number of relevant estimators appearing in the literature. In this context we consider different estimation periods as well as unconstrained and constrained portfolio optimization problems. The main finding of our simu-lation study concerning the optimization approach is that Markowitz outperforms Mi-chaud on average. Furthermore, the estimation strategy of Frost/Savarino (1988) proves to work excellent in all analyzed situations.

Usefulness of Bootstrapping in Portfolio Management
This paper contains a comparison of in-sample and out-of-sample performances between the resampled efficiency technique, patented by Richard Michaud and Robert Michaud (1999), and traditional Mean-Variance portfolio selection, presented by Harry Markowitz (1952). Based on the Monte Carlo simulation, data (samples) generation process determines the algorithms by using both, parametric and nonpar...
متن کاملApplication of Clayton Copula in Portfolio Optimization and its Comparison with Markowitz Mean-Variance Analysis
With the aim of portfolio optimization and management, this article utilizes the Clayton-copula along with copula theory measures. Portfolio-Optimization is one of the activities in investment funds. Thus, it is essential to select an appropriate optimization method. In modern financial analyses, there is growing evidence indicating the distribution of proceeds of financial properties is not cu...
متن کاملPortfolio Optimization Based on Cross Efficiencies By Linear Model of Conditional Value at Risk Minimization
Markowitz model is the first modern formulation of portfolio optimization problem. Relyingon historical return of stocks as basic information and using variance as a risk measure aretow drawbacks of this model. Since Markowitz model has been presented, many effortshave been done to remove theses drawbacks. On one hand several better risk measures havebeen introduced and proper models have been ...
متن کاملEfficient Portfolio Selection in a Large Market†
Recent empirical studies show that the estimated Markowitz mean-variance portfolios oftentimes perform rather poorly when there are more than several assets in the investment universe. In this article, we argue that such disappointing performance can be largely attributed to the estimation error incurred in sample mean-variance portfolios, and therefore could be improved by utilizing more effic...
متن کاملRobust One-Period Option Hedging
The paper considers robust optimization to cope with uncertainty about the stock return process in one period option hedging problems. The robust approach relates portfolio choice to uncertainty, making more cautious hedges when uncertainty is high. We represent uncertainty by a set of plausible expected returns of the underlying stocks and show that for this set the robust problem is a second ...
